Halter Ranch Tasting Room — a New Winemaker

Halter Ranch winery grounds - restored old ranch house on right

Halter Ranch has renovated its tasting room, winery facilities and wine making strategy. The winery grounds, buildings, patio, and Halter Ranch tasting room are renewed, but in keeping with the old ranch style stick architecture.  The Halter Ranch wines are the bargain of the trip.  Priced in the mid-$20, they are worth every penny.  We’ve previously tweeted about their 2008 Côtes de Paso ($28), an outstanding Rhône varietal.  Our notes say “cherries everywhere.”  But the real bargain was their 2010 Rosé with a long pink grapefruit finish. A very ripe pink grapefruit.  Halter Ranch rates as one of the true finds of this road trip.

Tony Lima has been a California wine fan since arriving in California from the east coast in 1974. He's lived the growth and expansion of the West Coast industry first hand. He's seen the fickle California Wine consumer fads pop up and burst... the craze for Zinfandel, then oaky Chardonnay, then Merlot, now Pinot Noir. On behalf of fellow Californian oenophiles, he hunts for great pinot noir and great values in pinot noir all along the West Coast. His day job is Professor of Economics at California State University located in Hayward. His undergrad degree in chemical engineering (MIT) and his MBA (Harvard) and Ph.D. Economics (Stanford) are the root of his interest in the Business of Wine.
